What to Know About RVs
If you’re a first-time RV or motorhome buyer, there are some things you’ll need to know.
Class Type: First, as you start looking around at different RVs, you’ll notice right away that the choices can be overwhelming. There are numerous options out there and even different classes of motorhomes that you’ll have to choose from.
The first class is Class A. These are the huge, luxurious motorhomes that have all the bells and whistles. They’ll cost you a pretty penny, but they’re well worth it if you plan on going on a long trip, have a lot of members in your family, or just prefer the glam aspect of “glamping.”
Class C motorhomes, on the other hand, are a little more economical and slightly smaller than Class A motorhomes. Some Class C motorhomes will have slide outs that create more space once you’re parked. Class C motorhomes are quite versatile, and you have a lot of add-on and feature options to choose from.
Finally, you have Class B motorhomes. These are the smallest of the bunch. A lot of people think of them as vans as opposed to the huge buses that Class A motorhomes are. But they are also smaller than class C motorhomes. Class B motorhomes are your most affordable choice, but they also offer the smallest amount of space. They’re the best for small families or couples and rather short trips.
Trailers: Regarding trailers, you basically have travel trailers, which are your smallest option, and fifth wheels. Travel trailers can be towed behind your vehicle with a hitch hook and are smaller than fifth wheels. Whereas a travel trailer can go behind an SUV, for example, fifth wheels are generally hitch mounted and pulled behind a pickup truck.
Insurance: Any motorhome or trailer you purchase should be fully insured. In fact, we like to say that anything bigger than a tent should be insured for your camping trip!
Unfortunately, many RV owners assume that they don’t need to insure their RV the way they do an automobile. In fact, all motorhomes that are either class A or B must be insured. They are just like cars.
Also remember that even if you have a standard auto insurance plan for the vehicles (cars and trucks), this policy will not automatically cover your RV.
Generally speaking, towable RVs and trailers do not require mandatory insurance, but if you want to protect your investment, insurance is always wise.
